Goal: Will implementing an IPad
one-to-one initiative for 8th graders help increase state test
scores in areas of math and science, improve overall engagement, homework and
attendance in the classroom all the while reducing the number of discipline
problems?

At the end of class students place a

me the response sheets; I compile the data and report the overall findings.

10.
Compile data from homework center to see if there is any change in the
number of students who are completing their homework due to having an Ipad.

I love the technology! My mom is also a teacher and they provided ipads for their classes as well, she loves them, her only complaint is that it can be hard to monitor students usage, but I think there is a cart that syncs mass amounts of ipads up at one time, so you might look into that. I know she also uses them in "centers" and she finds that helpful, I would love to see you create a list of the best educational apps in every department, I almost did my research project on that idea, but that may be more beneficial for you to have pre-programmed apps for student usage.
ReplyDeleteThis is going to be an interesting research topic. I am eager to see the results of this research when you complete it. I believe that students are more engaged when they have technology to work with. We have reached a point to where our kids are so loaded with technology, trying to "teach from a book" is just wasting time. This is my opinion. I am fortunate to teach classes in a computer lab (I teach three computer classes and 4 non-computer classes) so I have the technology at my fingertips, and it makes a world of difference. Good job on the plan. Again, can't wait to see the results!!
ReplyDeleteI thought of something as I read item seven in your plan: have you considered inviting a child or even a couple of children to take part in your focus group? It seems to me that, more often than not, the children all wander around complaining about something they imagine that we know (since they've all texted the complaint to one another and are well aware of it) or praising something that we did (even if by accident) and wishing we could do more of that. BUT THEY NEVER TELL US. Then they act shocked and indignant when we eventually find out and inform them that we had no idea.
ReplyDeleteWhat I'm getting at is this: if you let a few kids (Student Council President, National Junior Honor Society President, and, um, the Chess Club King or Queen or what-have-you) sit in even for just part of the focus group discussion, you might learn things that you never would have known otherwise. They might know about applications for the tech that you would never have dreamed of. They might have complaints that will send you and your colleagues in a different direction with regard to how you implement your one-to-one.
It's just an idea, but when I looked at the Person Responsible column in that row, I really hoped to see a kid or two in the list.
Thank you guys for the great comments and suggestions!
